Last Minute Mid-Term Breaks

Mid term break is next week 12 February. How in the name of sweet baby Jesus did that happen? So far, I’ve effectively been blinded by both St Brigid’s Day bank holiday and midterm break. And then we’ve Easter. Are these kids ever in school?

So, if like me, you’re looking at the calendar thinking feck it and want to try and book somewhere in Ireland for a last minute mid term break away, then here’s a few suggestions for hotel deals.

May the odds be ever in your favour.

If you want to pack in the activities for the smallies, this sounds like it could fit the bill. The package includes a family pass to a maritime themed attraction including Cork City Gaol, Spike Island, Titanic Experience Cobh and Cork Harbour Tours. We did the Titanic Cobh Experience and the two dudes loved it.

The hotel doesn’t have a pool, but there is lots in the vicinity to entertain as well as the above Fota Island is well worth a visit. The package also includes breakfast and one early bird dinner on the night of your choice.

The package for two adults and two children starts at €244 per night or €488 per stay for a signature room.

Kilashee in Naas is a lovely spot for the family. There’s lots of outdoor fun to entertain including a fairy forest trail, the Butterfly Gardens, the playground with its own zipline. There’s a children’s pool and full sized 25 metres swimming pool, as well as a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi if the grownups get a moment. The hotel also has a playroom filled with great toys for little people and a great selection of boards games for all the family to enjoy.

€585 two-night stay in a deluxe room with two queen size beds, full Irish breakfast both mornings, a three-course dinner on an evening of choice for two adults and two children.

After being named Favourite Family Friendly Hotel, Newpark Hotel's Jurassic Newpark experience, is proving to be a big draw for the smallies.

Their impressive dinosaurs themed park includes nifty life size animatronic dinos, an adventure playground, a mini wildlife park and go karting track. There’s also an indoor play area. Over mid term there is a kids club running for 4-12 year olds.

From €638 for a two-night stay including breakfast and an evening meal for the adults in Gulliver's Restaurant and high tea on one evening for children served in the Kids Club

I’ve actually done this little break and it was terrific. The hotel dates back to 1625 and is said to be haunted. There’s even a ghost room and a cool Game of Thrones door. My two smallies loved all the old stories and the fact we were sleeping in a castle.

The property doesn’t have a pool, but it sits right on the beach and this packages gives you dry robes, hot water bottles, slippers and flasks of hot drinks for the whole family. We then did the drive up to the Giant’s Causeway and had a blast.

€257 per night in a family room.
