Learning to swim is a vital life skill for children, but it’s also a huge amount of fun, especially if you start them young.

I can vividly remember bringing my first baby to Turtle Tots classes back in 2017 in his swim wrap and nappy, chubby legs and arms all set for the water. It was a wonderful introduction to the water and a great bonding session for us both, as well as a lovely bit of baby-to-baby socialisation too.

As I looked at the dinky swim nappy in my hands the other day, I couldn’t believe how small it was and how it just didn’t seem like that long ago when my now very tall eight-year-old could fit into it! But, in the blink of an eye, he and his brother are now flying up and down the pool, Michael Phelps style, doing front crawl, diving under the water, and jumping in like a pair of frogs.

Okay, so their technique might still need work, but you cannot put a price on confidence in the water. Having them feel comfortable in the water, knowing not to panic and what to do if they do get into difficulty is vital. Starting the swimming habit early is so important for young children.

Turtle Tots offer classes from 3 months up to five years and have 58 locations around Ireland.

This year they celebrate their 10th anniversary and they’ve given us a voucher for a free term of lessons to giveaway to one lucky person.
